tech weenie stuff
So, I finally bought the external hard drive I've been thinking about for the past 4 months, a random trip to Best Buy being the culprit. With the $60 instant rebate and a $20 gift card, I ended up dishing out $75 of my own money for a 60GB drive. It is powered through USB, so no power adapter needed. It's the money. Now I finally have that back-up for my pictures and can reformat my internal hard disk. All you techies know why I am so happy.
But, the whole experience has revealed another question. Are "instant rebates" legit? Or is that just part of the whole marketing scheme to make some product seem like a good deal? I've always wondered

they're legit.
Companies just know that the majority of people will be enticed by the offer of money back, but not actually do the work in order to receive it.
Yeah, I know my company is trying to get rid of those, cause the mail-in rebates are a real bitch, and sometimes you don't end up getting the check in the mail. Speaking of, I'm still waiting for a check that my company owes me ;-)
Why not just offload all the data you want through some other process, then buy a 400 gb HD for $100?
nub.
I wanted something external and easily transportable. Plus, unloading 15GB of stuff through "some other means" would take a long ass time and I get bored easily.
Why don't you get your ass to campus on May 24th.
what's going down for the big bday tomorrow anyway?
best buy is getting rid of all rebates by the fall because they are such a hassel for them.
Things that I use everyday that I got free or cheap on rebates or because of rebates:
IPod rebated 170 of 170 dollars
Guitar cables and Mic Stands rebated 300 of 250 dollars (done this at least four times)
Recording software rebated 300 of 500 dollars (logic express)
Huge packs of CDRs to burn my bands CD's on that we didn't find dumpster diving: rebated to free 39.99 of 40 somalians
Car Stereo system who's rebate payed for the purchase of the Infinity Speakers that went in shortly afterwards
CD Changer for car: bought for free on insurance claim... the rebate was for 200 dollars which arrived at my house two months later and payed for:
A night out drinking with BG and The Mad town boys in Madison where we danced drank smoked shisha ate trents grilled chicken at four am went to 'smut and eggs' with claude while still wasted and passed out in the couch that Omar did not pee on earlier that night and while this did not have a rebate, the fact that a rebate payed for the gas and the booze that I used... This is proof that rebates are good and worth while.
as jenna said, they use them to lure people in with the low price after rebate, but in reality it's surprising how few actually mail them in. a guy at US Cellular told me that only like 1 in 10 send in their phone rebates when they buy new ones.
mikey, half of those weren't rebates but insurance scams...
